Motivating and envolving projects in Signal Processing class

An engineering program has different kinds of subject, some are for basics engineering (mathematics, physical sciences), others are engineering sciences (based in mathematics and basic sciences) and also engineering design and application (specifically for each engineering program).

engineering sciences classes can be highly theoretical with limited possibilities of practical application, so for students these topics are many times a class that they must to take instead of a class that they want to take. This is the case of Signal Processing in Electronics Engineering and in Electrical Engineering

This clases has high mathematics content . It uses a lot of equations and concepts previously seen, making harder the learning process of students because they do not find easily the application to these concepts used in class.

For this reason, we have been made a series of practical projects, involving more to the students in their learning process and also motivating the application of the theory learned.

Usually the projects in this class are based in programming with software as Simulink or Matlab, with good results, however the new projects go further using software as a tool and not as a main core of project.

These projects involving students work in hardware development, design, and testing, that they create and control them, by themselves.

Hardware development is not limited to electronics or electrical issues, on the contrary it wants to expand to other application areas closer to life experiences of our students, such as, acoustic, visual arts, music and special effects.

The approach, implementation and evaluation of these projects has been done through cooperation of Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, Colombia, by proffesors of signal processing area, which enriches the project and it serves as a foundation for future work in teaching and learning between the two universities.
